Description

Hudson Taylor: Into the Heart of the Dragon - James Hudson Taylor was one of the most influential missionaries of the nineteenth century. Founder of China Inland Mission, he spent a total of 51 years spreading the gospel in China. Taylor was unique in his time; he adopted the dress and customs of the Chinese people, showing great respect for their culture, and his organization was strictly non-denominational. Generations of Christian evangelists have followed in his footsteps. Into the Heart of the Dragon is a striking docudrama filmed on location in China and the U.K. It paints an intimate portrait of Taylor’s life and legacy.

C. T. Studd - C. T. Studd had it all. Born into a wealthy upperclass family in England, he studied at Cambridge University and went on to become one of the country’s most celebrated athletes. But Studd realized that fame and flattery would not last, and as a Christian, he sensed a profound calling to forsake the things of the world and live for the world to come. Studd described his zealous, uncompromising faith as “muscular Christianity.” He reached countless people with the gospel message and challenged complacent Christians to engage in evangelism. Today his pioneering work continues through World Evangelization Crusade (WEC), the missions agency he founded in 1913. Filmed on location in England and China, this docudrama explores Studd’s extraordinary life and teaching through expert interviews and engaging re-enactment scenes.

Through Gates of Splendor - One of the most gripping missionary sagas of our time. Five missionaries went into the land of the savage Aucas. Their offer of friendship was rejected, and the Aucas killed the missionaries. Elisabeth Elliot, wife of one of the martyrs, her daughter and Rachel Saint would not give up and eventually lived among and brought the Gospel to the Aucas. Through Gates of Splendor is an effective demonstration of God’s grace at work during an unforgettable moment in modern missions history. [Caution: This DVD contains original film footage of Auca natives shot by Nate Saint which includes some brief nudity.]

Dr. David Livingstone - In the early part of the nineteenth century, Africa was called the dark continent. One man’s passion for Christ would change that view. Dr. David Livingstone took the Gospel to Africa in word and deed. As a medical doctor he treated the sick, earning him the necessary trust and respect to teach the love of Christ which many Africans freely embraced. Then Livingstone turned his attention to exploration, seeing this work as much a spiritual calling as traditional missionary work. Facing danger and sickness he forged routes deep into the African interior, sparking the imagination of many who would follow. Hailed as one of the greatest European explorers of all time, Livingstone’s commitment and eventual martyrdom helped bring an end to the slave trade and opened a continent to the Gospel. Discover the story of David Livingstone and see how faith and sacrifice can change the world.

Candle in the Dark - He sailed to India in 1793 with a reluctant wife and four children to bring the message of Jesus. There he encountered so much hardship it is amazing he didn't abandon his mission and go home. But he stayed for over 40 years. One issue that tormented him was sati—the burning alive of widows when their husbands died. He would not rest until this practice was stopped. Facing insurmountable odds, he "plodded" on to influence the abolition of sati and to become the revered "Friend of India" and "Father of Modern Missions." He oversaw more translations of the Bible than had been done in all previous Christian history combined. Life was never easy for Carey. But he simply refused to quit, even when a devastating fire destroyed years of his literary work. His legacy has inspired countless others from his own day to the present. William Carey shows dramatically how a life dedicated to God and obedient to His calling can make a profound difference in the world. Starring Richard Attlee, Lynette Edwards and Julie-Kate Olivier.
