Description

Over the centuries devout believers have sought for the best ways to bring their lives and thoughts closer to God. This wisdom is available for believers today and is effectively set forth in this four-part series. Richard Foster points the way to a new level of spiritual maturity through a rediscovery of the time-honored disciplines of Christian devotion. Use this series in small or large groups to spark a whole new interest in Bible study, prayer, and meditation. Dr. Foster lectures throughout the world on the "spiritual life." He has written "Freedom of Simplicity" and the best-selling "Celebration of Discipline," on which this series is based. Downloadable PDF guide available.

4-45 MIN. PROGRAMS:
Spiritual Discipline: Door to Liberation - The spiritual disciplines free us from ingrained habits of sin that keep us from knowing the joy and abundance Jesus promised.
Inward Disciplines (meditation, fasting, prayer, & study) - The inward disciplines--meditation, fasting, study, and prayer--can nurture internal righteousness in our lives. This inwardness is exemplified by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
Outward Disciplines (solitude, submission, service, & simplicity) - The outward disciplines--solitude, submission, service and simplicity--nourish the social dimension of the spiritual life. Without this social dimension, the spiritual life can degenerate into a search for self-satisfaction.
Corporate Disciplines (confession, worship, guidance, and celebration) - In our society, with its emphasis on "looking out for number one," we tend to forget that at its heart Christian worship is a corporate experience. This means that Christian fellowship has no functioning body unless we all work together in community. The same goes for the spiritual disciplines: they must be practiced as a system, not in isolation. The corporate disciplines are confession, worship, guidance, and celebration.
